Yo. I've expanded what we had for the About Digital Vomit page. I think in the long run we should think about raising our profile in general, and one thing that will help us is to explain what makes us unique, and to make it easy for people to "get it". This is what I've tried to do on this page, so if you're interested, have a read, tell me what's missing or what shouldn't be there, or just edit it yourself.

Ultimately we have a lot to be proud of right now, so we should start thinking about how we can get our message further out there.

Also, while I'm here, perhaps we could remove the tag cloud? I dunno, it would clean the site up a little, unless people think it's useful? If we took it out, we could use the space for a small news section perhaps? Or a couple of little adverts for the latest releases?

So while I love that wikipedia is often full of random stuff that's fun to read, I really F&&King hate the attitude that they have to delete anything "non-notable". F^^king server space is virtually unlimited you arses, why not just include everything, rather than being power tripping arseholes? Well anyway, Solypsis is considered "non-notable" (sorry dude) as is Digital Vomit itself. Basically, if we wanted to be "notable", we'd have to have some coverage from tradition press somewhere, or release stuff by artists who are already "notable". I reckon this is a load of crap, because at the end of the day, for a small scene like we are, we are both the producers and the publicity of it. Also, haven't we released stuff by notable artists (namely V/Vm and Goodiepal to name two)? Haven't we had Radio 3 airplay? Well, apparently people in the noise scene aren't notable enough for wikipedia editors. Here they are dissing us

Well anyway, I'd love to make a compilation called "Non-notable" and promote it as all artists that wikipedia has deleted pages for. You could almost certainly get a degree of press coverage with such a stunt, and of course the irony then is that the compilation and artists contained therein would then become notable :P

If you wanna see what else power tripping wikipedia editors don't think is worth keeping, check out Deletionpedia

I still really like it as an idea, and there were some cool sounds in there, so does anyone have the ringtones still (Junkshop? Mixo?? Solypsis???), and if so, can they upload them/link to them so we can make it accessible again?

New loop-based project

 <wikidot:authorName>Mixomatosis</wikidot:authorName> <wikidot:authorUserId>47236</wikidot:authorUserId>

As mentioned briefly before, here's the fuller details of this new loop-based project, currently under the working title of ∞.

Basically the idea is to get people to create loops of music that can be played in any given order and form a coherant piece. So say 8 people sent in a loop, A-H. When played next to each other a combination of ABCDEFGH could be shuffled into DGACBHFE and still work as a single piece of music. And that's basically the idea.

What you lot would need to do is create some loops. Now in order for this to work well, all loops would need to be the same length. For this project, I'm setting the loop length as 15 seconds. This means that you could comfortably work with a tempo of 128bpm, or indeed any of the following:

8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512

Alternatively you could make something without a tempo, ie. a drone or noise. However, the precise length of each track would need to be 15 seconds. Not 15.01 seconds, neither 14.99, but 15 on the dot. And there should be no gap at the start or finish of the track - The entire 15 seconds should be filled with sound. If you're doing something with a 4 to the floor beat, the first beat should come in at 0.0 seconds. You get the idea. There's no limits with which key you use, nor with the style of music. (Ab)use of samples is fine.

Format is TBC. Although I'd like to do a CD, I'm not sure it would work conceptually, because usually if you put a CD player on shuffle it pauses between tracks, which would destroy the effect of all these tracks coming together as a single piece. As MP3 software technology improves however the gaps between tracks are almost non-existant now, particularly in iTunes, so I guess this will probably be an MP3 release. Whether that's as a download or a data CD or even a USB stick is still unknown. The added bonus with releasing it as MP3s of course is that extra tracks can be added on at later dates, officially or otherwise.

So yeah, that's the general idea. Some other details for the anally retentive amongst you… Because this is effectively meant to be a single track, submissions should not have track titles attached to them. Also, in a move similar to other short-track releases like No Time To Waste or Sloppy Seconds, you can submit as many tracks as you like, but each one should be under a different name. The release code, if not DVR025, will be DVR∞. :)

Completed tracks should be sent as WAVs to lee.ashcroft@hotmail.co.uk. Any submissions that are either not 15 seconds or contain gaps may be altered to fit the project. If your track doesn't fit and can't be fixed, I'll be in touch.

Have fun!

A thought about net releases...

Since all that went down (if you don't know what I mean, don't ask), the sudden influx of net releases came to pretty much a stand still. Maybe people are too scared to release them now, maybe they've all just dried up for the time being, I don't know. But as you all probably know, I've always tried to push for physical releases whenever possible. To me, that's what this whole thing is about - putting records out against all the odds. But that's not to say online releases don't have their place, of course. So, one thought I had was that online releases could be released under a sub-label. Something like 'digi.vom' or whatever. But all of these releases would remain attached to and available from this wiki/website. It would just be a new way of differentiating between the physical and online releases, but would leave the name 'Digital Vomit' for exclusively releasing physical products only.

Maybe I'm just overcomplicating things with this; solving a problem that isn't really there. I dunno. It'd be interesting to hear what you lot think though.

I have an idea for a compilation. Yes, one of those things which brings us all (well, most of us) together in a peace and harmony.

I bought at Christmas a Psychic TV 12inch of one of their old acid songs. Apparently,
despite the appearance on the sleeve, both sides are by the same people under different names.
In fact the whole album it comes from is a fake compilation.

I was thinking it would be fun to do an Acid compilation the same way - anyone who contributes a track would do it under a pseudonym they have never used before: you're not allowed to call yourself by your normal "perfomance" name or one you've used before!

Is this a dumb idea? would anyone be up for it? it ain't exactly the most world changing idea as i'd like to keep the sound fairly traditional i suppose.

I guess by starting this thread i am volunteering to curate the damn thing.

any thoughts?

just tossing this one out there for consideration….

as we're currently engaging this issue of physical releases, perhaps this idea will have some merit/

it's been fairly well accepted that the Can Buy Me Love series has pretty much run its course, but it's a model for physical product creation that deserves to continue some sort of life. well then, how about this:

most everyone wants to release an album of their own on CD or vinyl, but few have the money to see it happen. Mitch's problems seeing his album released are a perfect case in point // the desire is there, but the money never seems to be fully available.

now, what if you had "sponsors"? let's say you have a 40 minute album you'd like released and at the end of the album (hell, perhaps scattered throughout the album) there appeared "commercials" provided by various other artists? what if the remaining 40 minutes of the disc were paid for by people who did remixes of the album's tracks, or even with original compositions? perhaps the primary musician could front the bulk of the pressing costs and the rest could be supplemented by other artists who could gain exposure similar to CBML only perhaps at a lesser investment?

i know i would be happy to provide a remix and some cash to Mitch. he's helped ALL of us out here in a variety of ways with his Hallo Excentrico netlabel.

anyways, these albums would obviously benefit from having a very motivated organizer in the primary artist…

thoughts?

What's with the MP3 releases? I thought when DV was started, people were going "this is not a netlabel, we want effort going into every release, a physical item, blah blah"…

Was it all just talk? People like talking.
