Just a quick note to say I've bagged this number for my next album. I've got so much unreleased stuff knocking around it only seems reasonable to get some of it out there. It'll be a free download - look out for it in the next week or so.

Forum category: General Discussion / Digital Vomit stuff
Forum thread: DVR 054

Thanks again for letting me know about Exact Audio Copy. I finally have something to replace CDX Rescue which will stubbornly plow through corrupt CD's.

(CDX Rescue was made by 1-2-3 Software, which went out of business in 2007 following a copyright-infringement lawsuit over their DVD ripping software. When this happened, CDX Rescue - which required a connection to their server for registration purposes before it would even install - became a beer coaster I've never found a crack for.)

EDIT: I lied, it was 3-2-1 Software. Dyslexics of the world, untie!

Forum category: General Discussion / Digital Vomit stuff
Forum thread: Bernie Sizzey

My associate had an email from Paul Gray today, who despite having no knowledge about it, reckons it might be Captain Sensible, "seeing as it was a favourite phrase of Caps". Irony is, one rumour suggests that this was this song was dedicated to Gray's girlfriend at the time. We're currently waiting to hear back from Rat Scabies and The Damned's booking agent. The plot it doth thicken…

Forum category: General Discussion / Digital Vomit stuff
Forum thread: DVR053 - "Unknown Top-Ten Artist" - Dedicated To _ _ _ _ _

Like TC said, maybe I'll feel differently once I've listened to the rest of what promises to be a mammoth collection, but so far, I rather like this! "Smokin and Trippin Song" is totally stuck in my head. I suppose this is a cheap comparison, but there's a whimsy about some of this music that I find reminiscent of solo-era Syd Barrett (another of my no-doubt-highly-unfashionable influences).

Hey Mixo, what did you use to clean up the corrupted CD-R's? I sure could use such a thing as I continue the herculean task of digitizing my entire collection.

Forum category: General Discussion / Digital Vomit stuff
Forum thread: Bernie Sizzey

Coming in the next few days, a 25-year old musical oddity that as yet remains unattributed to any artist. The strongest rumour is that it was by an "Unknown Top-Ten Artist" here in the UK. Some say Captain Sensible, some say Tony Hawks (the comedian and travel writer that is, not Tony Hawk the pro-skateboarder), some say the "Top-Ten" bit's a red herring…

The MP3, weighing in at 4:39 and around 10mb, will be accompanied by a minisite dedicated to finding out who was responsible for this obscene piece of smooth jazz from 1984. I figure a good way of finding out who's responsible is to release it myself and wait for someone to claim copyright. It's certainly worth a shot.

The release will also contain artwork and instructions on how to make (and distribute) your own CD-R singles, so you can join in on the mystery.

(Some of you may have heard me play this during sound checks at Mixo gigs in the past…)

Forum category: General Discussion / Digital Vomit stuff
Forum thread: DVR053 - "Unknown Top-Ten Artist" - Dedicated To _ _ _ _ _

i quite enjoy this. and not so much in an ironic sense…some of the music is actually kinda awkwardly good, and the horrible recording quality lends itself quite well to the overall melancholy feeling of the music. whether by accident or not, the fuzziness and tape hiss gives it a kind of freescha/fennesz/flying saucer attack feel…then combined with the daniel johnston-y vocals it all comes across rather charmingly.

Forum category: General Discussion / Digital Vomit stuff
Forum thread: Bernie Sizzey

Pre-orders will be open very soon, in a brand new uncluttered thread, via PayPal. By "very soon", I mean in the next day or two. Everyone pre-ordering will be sent a copy of the cartridge as soon as they're in my possession, and access to an MP3/FLAC download on release day at the latest. I'm still trying to work out other incentives, and will add them as and when. If you pre-order now however, you will still receive the entire package, including the extras still to be decided upon.

Please note that pre-ordering is the ONLY way to guarantee a copy. If I have any available to sell upon release day, we'll be talking single-figure numbers maximum, and not only will you be charged P+P, but there's no guarantee of receiving any of the extras. In case you can't tell, I'm really trying to encourage pre-ordering… ;) Please also note that if I do not get enough orders (ideally I'd like to get at least fifty), the project may have to be cancelled. If this happens, you will of course receive a full refund.

I still need to double check the figures, but assuming I've got it correct, THE PRICE IS SET AT £20 GBP, ROUGHLY $33 USD. This covers the cost of production, including artwork, the cost of the tapes being sent to me in bulk (a figure I won't have until they're ready to ship from the US sadly), and P+P to anywhere on earth at no extra cost (the free P+P is only available when pre-ordering). I realise this is a high price to ask for, which is why I'm trying to get as many extras in there as possible for added value, however please know that I do not stand to make a penny out of this. If I'm lucky I'll wipe my face, but realistically I suspect I'll be making a small loss. But that needn't concern you, just know that this is not likely to be a money-spinner.

Please also note that, as far as I'm aware, every track on this release will be exclusive, so you will not hear these tracks on any other release. All copyright is retained by the artists of course, so this is beyond my control, but I'm fairly sure everyone's keeping with the spirit of the project in that sense. Similarly, this compilation will not appear on CD, and will only be available digitally to those ordering the tape.

This is a very exciting project for me, as this will most likely decide whether or not I go ahead with my Dead Air label project, resurrecting other dead music formats for minimal artistic consumption (I've already had a few highly radical ideas that will be so expensive I'll probably only be able to afford to press one or two copies…!), so please offer your support if you can.

And if nothing else the tape might be worth a bit in a few years time if the collectors pick up on it… ;)

Forum category: General Discussion / Digital Vomit stuff
Forum thread: DVR062 - Various - 8-Track Remind

I'm going to be starting with the final album in the collection, Hippie Scat, as this is a best-of compilation and a perfect entry into Bernie's World for the uninitiated. There's no real reason this shouldn't make it online this week, particularly as I have my own webspace now. The rest will come in drips and drabs as I get the chance to work on de-glitching the audio.

The man himself is somewhat stigmatised in Colchester - he's an open transvestite, he's on several hallucinogenic drugs, he spends many days smoking and drinking special brew round the back of the Mercury Theatre (before being moved on by the police), he has serious mental health issues, and unless you already know the man (or you're me) you'd probably cross the road to avoid him. Yet, and I have Massive Hospitalisation's Staff to thank for hooking me up with the man and his music, there is something about his music that is absolutely captivating. All aspects of his life are laid bare for all to see, and it's really a unique way of looking into a world that might as well be a million miles from my own. There's something in this collection that everyone can latch on to, if you'll allow it to. His musicianship isn't great, like most musicians generally defined as "outsider" (folks like Daniel Johnston, Jandek, BJ Snowden, The Shaggs…) but it's his sincerity that makes this worthwhile. And you know what, there are some genuinely great tunes in there amongst the keyboard presets, and some pretty clever lyrics that could make you laugh and cry, so your patience may yet be rewarded.

Like most releases on this label (even the relatively popular ones like Realicide and Jansky Noise) this collection won't be for everyone, but I have a feeling this could even divide opinion on here, such is the highly erratic nature of the audio. I know Big In Albania's not a fan for one… ;) And I very much look forward to seeing what comes of it. As nice a community as this is, it's all been a bit crawly-bum-lick of late, and needs something to get the passion burning again. Pidgin aside, I can't remember the last time someone openly criticised a release on here. I hope people do enjoy this collection, but equally I hope some people hate it. Hell, there's tracks on there I don't even like, but it still all deserves to be heard. Maybe that's perverse of me, but I'm just interested to mix things up a bit on here. Hence I'm now working on five different projects for this label… :S

Incidentally, Bernie doesn't have internet access, and apparently he's lost his password for the library, so I doubt he'll be passing through any time soon. And I only ever see him by chance when I'm in town. However, I will endeavour to pass on any comments as and when.

Forum category: General Discussion / Digital Vomit stuff
Forum thread: Bernie Sizzey
