blimey. the breeze is really getting out of hand.
i just re-discovered the joy of watching "shitty" movies (although i don't believe there is such thing as a shitty movie. there are only entertaining movies and boring movies. quality is irrelevent).
some newly discovered (and re-watched gems):
living dead girl
poultrygeist
dolemite
flash gordon
flesh gordon
blood feast
turkish pop cinema (the greatest bad movies ever filmed. some are remarkably entertaining, like "the deathless devil", while some are insufferable - and famous - like the turkish star wars http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7069307816427160377#
starcrash
up next for viewing:
men behind the sun
sweet movie
zardoz
anaconda
wish me luck.
any other suggestions?
Zardoz is excellent, and I don't mean that in an ironic way either.
Some of my favourite so-good-so-bad films (that aren't just horror films, although they are horrifying in their own way):
Cruising
Beyond the Valley of the Dolls
The Baby
The Holy Mountain (thanks Hooray!)
Caligula (make sure to see the full version, not the edit)
Also, classic Bollywood is an absolute joy, but I never know where to start really.
i already own beyond the valley of the dolls (russ meyer! you gotta see faster pussycat, kill! kill! if you haven't already), LOVE (and own) the holy mountain (el topo is also great. santa sangre is worth a look, too) and own caligula (tinto brass is generally somewhat unwatchable). hafta check out the baby and cruising (isn't cruising the violently homophobic movie?)
gonna watch some horrific 90's action soon…got stone cold in queue.
Speaking of zardoZ, the director, John boorman, did exorcist 2 which kickstarted my whole bad movie kick. Fucking hilariously dreadful.
Hahaha, dude, honestly it sounds like we share similar taste in films then innit.
russ meyer! you gotta see faster pussycat, kill! kill! if you haven't already
No surprise then that I have seen it and love it, as well as Vixen!, Supervixens, Ultra-vixen, Common Law Cabin, Finders Keepers etc. etc. Beyond The Valley of the Dolls is probably my favourite though just for finding that balance between Meyer's breast obsession and complete whacked out 60s psychedelic weirdness.
cruising (isn't cruising the violently homophobic movie?)
Pretty much, although most of the violence is off camera, and in many ways you could argue that it's a celebration of the pre-aids punk era "leatherman" gay scene in NY. Ultimately it's complete trash, but a) has a wonderful young Al Pacino playing completely against type, and b) has an excellent soundtrack.
When it comes to so-bad-they're-good movies, I have four words:
Can't Stop the Music. The Village People movie.
Just… damn.
a few i can think of:
toxic avenger
videodrome
swamp thing
bad boy bubby
also, i watched robocop again this week and it still stands up as a great film :)
toxic avenger is awesome
videodrome is amazing, and the furthest thing from what i'd consider a "bad" movie
swamp thing…haven't seen that in 25 years, probably
i've got bad boy bubby in queue on netflix….i'll let ya know when i see it
…and robocop is among the finest films ever created. i'm dead serious.
must admit i love russ meyer films too….looks like we all have great taste :)
the blues brothers!
thanks for reminding me of how great russ meyer is, mattie…i've been catching up on his movies all week. "vixen!" is awesome…now on to "beneath the valley of the ultravixens", "supervixen" and "megavixens".
