Still he aint only man whats puttin it fer free. Seems like every other week in uk Daily Mail (or similar) givin someone's album away… Prince, Ray Davis, UB40, Moby etc.

i appreciate the fact that its free, but im not liking the sound of this new album. i thought the last one "Ghosts" was more of a step in the right direction for him at this stage. it sounds a bit too similar to previous stuff for my liking.

i dig the new album even though it's far from being innovative…sometimes i just enjoy something being comfortable like an old shirt…it's the old man in me. i know, i know….blasphemy. besides, a band can repeat themselves if they do it well, and i think he does.

as for other people giving their albums away, that's a great thing. this is a major trend, not just an experiment and shows that the tide is definitely turning against a greedy, dying industry. that said, i do believe he has been a bit more earnest in his attempts at trying new, risky marketing methods —- those other bands still have label backing, whereas nin do not have a label at all anymore (except his own 'nothing'), plus he's been pretty actively attempting to subvert the whole ticketmaster monopoly (although just as unsuccessfully as everyone else)..

which reminds me: i seldom go to "big" shows anymore solely because i can't tolerate ticketmaster's obscene service charges. they are destroying live music.

strangely enough the album has grown on me upon a second listen…….as for ticketmaster, i think we all know its robbery plain and simple. yet another middle man making you think that you need them.

Yeah, Ticketmaster is just a complete scam and I have no idea why we put up with it. Last time I bought some tickets from them I got stung like this:

2 Tickets @ £10 = £20
£5 booking fee PER TICKET!
Plus £5 "Postage & packing" on top.
So that's £15 mark-up on £20 tickets FOR WHAT TICKETMASTER, FOR WHAT?!

The artist still gets a load of money from the paper through licensing though. Not that I'm not all for it though, despite it being the Mail.

This is what it's all about - free content, no cash involved. Yes, there's going to be a physical product, but with all the freely available formats online, I can forgive Reznor for putting a CD out. And there's no faux-communist ideal behind it like with In Rainbows, which is fantastic.

I'm still waiting for the first major recording artist to release a brand new album online for free without a physical release behind it though. This is a step in the right direction though.

EDIT: Actually, I think Harvey Danger might have done this a while back. Not sure though.

That's the first I've heard the In Rainbows ploy compared to Communism, which I find rather humorous if true. I must admit if I were as large an act as Radiohead, simple intruige into "what would happen" would be a big lure into doing what they did.

I heard about this before - just getting my copy.. I loved Ghosts… I couldn't see him carrying that on here, though am looking forward to it! In my thoughts - even the worst of NIN is usually worth hearing at least!!!!!
